Event Summary

March 31, 2009 – Alloptic, a provider of radio frequency over glass (RFoG) and passive optical networking (PON) solutions for cable television (CATV), telecom, and private network operators worldwide, announced the availability of its DPC software, Alloptic’s DOCSIS PON Controller, which enables DOCSIS provisioning and control of its Ethernet PON (EPON) system. DPC facilitates the acceleration of PON rollouts by cable multiple systems operators (MSOs) and others using DOCSIS for service delivery.

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Positive on Alloptic’s debut of the DOCSIS PON Controller (DPC) solution, as it will catalyze and accelerate “deep fiber” deployments by cable operators, enabling them to target new customer bases (i.e., the small-to-medium enterprise [SME] market) and market sectors/applications such as the high-potential mobile backhaul market, while leveraging DOCSIS flow-through provisioning and control capabilities, making the integration of new PON system elements with the DOCSIS architecture a straightforward, almost seamless procedure.

• Vendor Importance: Moderate to high to Alloptic, which needed the DPC solution in order to maintain its position at the forefront of the cable PON market, where the company has been a pioneer. Alloptic now counts more than 55 customers with active RFoG deployments, including eight of the top ten MSOs that are deploying RFoG; in fact, the Alloptic RFoG solution is being leveraged by several other key vendors in this sector, which through strategic partnerships have incorporated Alloptic’s RFoG solution via a daughter card on their OLT platforms (e.g., Motorola).

• Market Impact: Moderate to high on the cable infrastructure/PON market, because Alloptic has already established de facto leadership of this sector, and with the new DPC, Alloptic has served notice to rivals that it intends to retain/defend this position moving forward. Also, with cable operators in multiple geographies looking at RFoG and DOCSIS-enabled PON solutions as a critical next-step in their battle with telco operators for customers/market share (again, now including the business and backhaul sectors), the DPC introduction is well-timed and merits the attention of rivals.
