Event Summary

February 17, 2009 –- Iskratel and GENBAND announced the interoperability of their SI3000 Call Server (SI3000 CS) and the G9 Converged Gateway. The integrated solution will expand its reach in high-capacity metropolitan networks and interoperate with mobile networks. The SI3000 CS supports a many network protocols including Russian specific implementations. Iskratel’s presence in the European markets, the combined portfolio should strengthen either company’s solution in this market segment.

Analytical Summary

• Current Perspective: Slightly positive on Iskratel and GENBAND announcing a successful interoperability testing and implied partnering distribution agreement because there is a clear benefit to both companies. The interoperability provides Iskratel’s softswitch solution, the SI3000 CS, with a widely deployed media gateway that enables it to scale more effectively in certain applications and bring new revenue opportunities through interconnecting to mobile networks. GENBAND, generally recognized as a best-of-breed media gateway supplier, needs relationships with softswitch vendors in order to offer a more complete solution. Through the integration, GENBAND gains a broader solution and another distribution partner with specific expertise and coverage within an emerging geographical region.

• Vendor Importance: High to Iskratel’s SI3000 CS interoperating with the GENBAND G9 gateway because softswitch vendors need to be able to interoperate with as many vendor gateway devices as possible. While seeking interoperability testing with them all is impractical, partnering with one of the major players in the media gateways market and interoperating with a mature and widely deployed product in general will help to minimize any potential compatibility problems that arise during deployments. An additional benefit is that Iskratel can immediately start pursuing and bidding on solutions for mobile networks.

• Market Impact: Moderate on both the softswitch market and the media gateway market segments. The interoperability gives softswitch vendor Iskratel another gateway solution for its portfolio and adds mobile reach. For GENBAND, adding another softswitch vendor’s platform to its checklist and a potential good distribution channel partner to its already extensive and impressive list of partners for its media gateways, improves its market appeal especially in emerging markets such as Russia.
